The Signals That Matter: Resumes, Cover Letters, and Success on the Job Search

Open-access study tracking 183 Canadian co-op students applying for full-time jobs. Applicants whose resumes and cover letters scored higher on detail, clarity, and structure secured substantially more interviews and found jobs faster — even after controlling for experience, achievement, and tailoring.

Why I recommend it: Open-access, peer-reviewed short communication. The key takeaway is that writing quality matters as a hiring signal, but the sample is students in one co-op program, and the authors note this also means the same signals can be generated by tools like ChatGPT.

9 Dying Industries That Aren't Worth Getting Jobs In At This Point

FinanceBuzz article by Josh Koebert, syndicated on MSN, listing nine fields it argues are shrinking: journalism, computer programming, data entry, telemarketing, photography, translation, bookkeeping, legal assistance and customer service. It cites Bureau of Labor Statistics projections — 4% fewer journalism jobs, 6% fewer programming jobs and 6% fewer bookkeeping jobs by 2034 — and points at information security analysts as a growing alternative with a 2024 median salary above $124,000.

Why I recommend it: Useful as a prompt to check your own field's BLS projection — not as career advice. Three things I would not take from it: the headline conclusion is the writer's opinion, not the BLS's; a projected national decline says nothing about whether good jobs exist in your city; and the page is packed with affiliate links to insurance and money products, which is how it earns. Look up the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook entry for your own job title and read that instead.

Paid tiers start at Rs.99/month.

Why I recommend it: Use the free tier for the ATS score, not the writing. It is a quick way to see whether a machine can read your layout at all, which is the failure most people never find out about. Two notes: pricing is set in Indian rupees, and no resume tool's score is the actual employer's screening system — a high number means readable, not shortlisted.

Manifest Law: U.S. Visa & Green Card Services

An immigration law firm's full menu of U.S. work visas and green cards — O-1, H-1B, TN, E-1/E-2/E-3, J-1, L-1, EB-1A, EB-2 NIW, EB-3, EB-5 — each with a plain explainer, plus free guides, current USCIS processing times, the monthly visa bulletin, employer sponsorship checklists and immigration news.

Why I recommend it: Read it for the free half: the visa explainers, the processing-time tracker, the visa bulletin and the employer guides cost nothing and are clearer than most government pages. The legal work itself is paid and they publish no prices anywhere on the site, so if you contact them, ask in writing for a flat fee in dollars for your specific case before signing. They also list a pro bono service and free webinars. A firm writing about the visas it sells is still marketing — useful, but not neutral advice.

Let's Create Careers (Entry Point)

A newsletter for university students and early-career professionals on building a career deliberately: networking with low effort, building a portfolio when you are not an artist, reputation-building as a young professional, early-career growth rules, job hunting after graduation, and working in and around AI. Launched in early 2026. Every issue in the recent archive is free to everyone, and the whole archive is open.

Why I recommend it: Best for the first few years of a career, where the advice gap is widest — the pieces on networking and on building a portfolio without being a designer are the ones to start with. It is one writer's experience rather than researched guidance, so treat it as a practitioner's notes: take the habits, check any claim about hiring against a source that publishes its numbers.

Tech:NYC Job Board

A free job board covering openings across the Tech:NYC network — the industry group representing New York tech employers. It was showing 7,816 live jobs when I checked, and it is deliberately weighted towards in-person New York roles rather than remote listings. Filters cover job title and keyword, seniority, salary and company, and a separate tab lets you browse the member companies themselves, which is useful even if you never apply through the board. You can join their talent network and set job alerts free. Listings are aggregated by Getro, so the postings live on each employer's own site and the board is a directory pointing at them. Not just engineering: the roles on show ranged from banking and accounting at J.P. Morgan to enterprise sales at OpenAI to brand and communications work.

Why I recommend it: Use the company browser before the job list. Because every employer here is a Tech:NYC member, that tab is a ready-made target list of New York tech companies — and reaching a hiring manager at one of them directly beats being applicant 400 on the board. Two honest notes: the count changes daily and an aggregated board can carry stale postings, so always confirm the role still exists on the employer's own careers page before you invest time in a tailored application; and because it is New York-focused by design, it is the wrong board if you need remote work.

Turns a target role, location and skills into focused Google search queries that surface openings on company career pages and applicant tracking systems such as Greenhouse, Lever and Workday.

From the site: Find hidden jobs on career pages, Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, and other ATS routes before they spread across public boards.

Why I recommend it: Free to use, with no pricing published. The real skill here is the search technique: fresher postings on a company's own careers page usually have far less competition than the same job on a big aggregator. Always apply through the company page you land on.

A job search portal built around visa sponsorship: every listing carries a score for how likely sponsorship is (confirmed, likely, possible, or not sponsored), and you can filter by country, field and work mode. Upload a resume and it also scores your match against jobs and helps with applications. Free during its early access period, with no card required.

Why I recommend it: Useful if you are looking for work in a country you need sponsorship for, which almost no mainstream job board tells you anything about. Two honest cautions: it says free during early access, so free today does not mean free next month, and a sponsorship score is the site's guess from a job posting, not a promise from the employer, so confirm with the company before you build plans on it. Uploading your resume means handing it to their AI providers.

The Aftermath Plan: A 30/60/90 for Layoffs and Reorgs

A free printable workbook for the weeks after a layoff, reorg or exit you did not choose, written by Erica Rivera, a former Google and Indeed recruiter. It walks through the first 72 hours, then days 1-30 (runway math, benefits and unemployment deadlines, severance review), days 31-60 (evidence of your work, your narrative) and days 61-90 (options and offers), with space to write your own answers and date them.

Why I recommend it: The most useful page is the first 72 hours: read the separation agreement slowly, do not sign on day one, and handle healthcare and unemployment deadlines before you touch your resume. It is written for senior women with 12+ years in, so the framing assumes that; the deadlines and runway math apply to anyone. It downloads straight as a PDF with no email required.

Capital One's full-time rotational programs for new graduates, covering technology, data, business analysis, product, design, audit and management tracks. Associates rotate across teams for a set period with structured mentorship, then settle into a role. The page lists each program and links to its current openings.

Why I recommend it: These are paid graduate jobs, not training you buy, and applying costs nothing. Rotational programs suit you if you do not know which team you want; if you already do, a direct role gets you there faster. Openings are seasonal, so search the listings rather than trusting the overview page, and check each posting for the degree year and work-authorization requirements before you spend time on the application.

alpha-hunt

An open-source (MIT) job-hunting automation tool that scans company career pages every 15 minutes, submits applications to applicant tracking systems when it is confident about a match, pulls wider market listings through the Adzuna jobs API, and sends alerts to Telegram.

Why I recommend it: Powerful and blunt. Auto-submitting applications will get you volume, not fit, so if you run this, keep the confidence threshold high and still write your own answers for the roles you actually want. Read the code before you hand it your resume.

Recruitment Funnel Benchmarks: Conversion Rates by Stage

Hiring-funnel data showing roughly 6% of job views become applications, 3% of applicants reach an interview, and 27% of interviewees are hired - about one hire per 180 applicants, with tech roles needing far more applicants than healthcare.

Why I recommend it: Read this when the silence feels personal. It is not: 97% of applicants are screened out before a human ever sees them. That is the argument for referrals, sourcing, and warm outreach over another 40 cold applications.
