What it is

OpenCode does the same job as an editor plugin but lives in the terminal, which makes it quicker and less chatty. You tell it what to change, it changes it, you review.

It is free and open source. The optional Zen gateway is a pay-as-you-go way to reach hosted models without setting up accounts with each provider.

Reach for it if you are comfortable at a command line and want batch changes across many files rather than a conversation about one.

OpenCode is an open-source terminal agent: the program itself runs entirely on your machine, and you choose which model it talks to.

What you need first

Node.js 18+ (or use the standalone installer)
A model key, or a local model server such as Ollama

Step by step

1.Install it

npm install -g opencode-ai
```

2.Or use the one-line installer

curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/install | bash

3.Start it in the folder you want it to work in
```
cd my-project && opencode
```
4.Sign in to whichever model provider you're using
```
opencode auth login
```

It edits real files in the folder you launch it from — work in a copy or a clean branch until you trust it.
